I was very fortunate to travel with my daughter to Lithuania in August to see The Terra Firma LT office & spend time with my friend & colleague Ramune and her family.

We visited the historic resort town Druskininkai that has salty springs with healing properties. Druskininkai is famous for its picturesque natural and manmade landscape with plenty of attractions including a musical fountain.

We also visited the Dzukija national park nearby with its piney forests and windy rivers where we spent an afternoon canoeing down a deserted lake.

Back in Vilnius, Terra firma LT’s office is situated in the old town, near the recently restored Bernardine Garden, which Ramune has been involved in, as part of the restoration process. Vilnius Old town is a UNESCO heritage site with beautiful baroque architecture, curved streets and greenery.

The parks and landscapes of Lithuania appear very natural in places, much more wild compared to the UK’s countryside and city parks. There is a great deal of scope for landscape architects in both protecting and adding to the natural environment.

One of the best vantage points to appreciate the city is from St. John’s church bell tower, which also has the amazing Foucault pendulum.

Ramune has made a very good start with the new practice in Vilnius and is already working on a remarkably wide range of projects with her small team. It was great to meet up with her in her home city and we look forward to seeing her over here at Christmas.
