Originally found in 1907, the Muslim War Cemetery Peace Garden restoration recently bagged first place in the Urban Green Space category for the 2019 Local Government Street Design Awards.
The Peace Garden features a total of 27 birch trees, one for each of the Allied Muslim soldiers that fought for Britain in WWI and WW2. It also features an up-lit memorial with the names of the servicemen, so their sacrifice is never forgotten.
LocalGov describe the scheme as “visually stunning”. The article continues to say: “Our judges from the Landscape Institute awarded it near perfect scores in both quality of design and for achieving its aims and objectives”.
Lionel Fanshawe, Director and Principal Landscape Architect at terra firma, entered the Peace Garden into the Street Design Awards and travelled to Woking alongside Paul Strugnell, Landscape Assistant at terra firma, to the award presentation.
“We are obviously thrilled with this award! The scheme has a fascinating cultural heritage and we worked with really good local authority clients and terrific teams for both design and delivery.”
Lionel Fanshawe, Director and Principal Landscape Architect
